Take Out the Trash WTSHTF?
What about getting rid of your trash in a SHTF situation. It's pretty easy to tell what someone has by what they throw away (i.e., growing mounds of tuna and beef stew cans). :hmmmm:
Piles of garbage still strewn across New Orleans Residents frustrated by city's failure to clean up rotting trash http://goldismoney.info/forums/attac...1&d=1157391639 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9673844/ |

I'm working on a little stove to basically burn all, yet remain easy to clean out (so you wouldn't have to sort out and remove plastics, metals, etc.) and keep the fumes far away that it wouldn't kill me. I'd hope it could be used for heat, as well as possibly generating electricity (although inefficiently) if I ever get that far. |
Re: Take Out the Trash WTSHTF?
What trash ?
IF the SHTF, there won't be much.....you'll save every pc of cardboard, string and tin can from the 'old' days and find a use for it, just like folks did in the depression. |

Toss trash?
after a few weeks, we'll be happy to EAT the trash! |
Re: Take Out the Trash WTSHTF?
I'd seperate it out into different classes based on the type of garbage it is.
1) things that are useful as is like glass jars with lids or salvagable for spare parts 2) things that make good compost 3) things that make good fuel to burn 4) metals that can be melted down and recast or otherwise reworked into useful objects 5) thermoplastics that can be melted down in a double boiler and recast 6) hazardous waste to be disposed of in a pit in some far off forsaken land. If you live in a densley populated area chances are the useless eaters will make it a disease ridden toxically poluted area so it's pointless to worry about. On this subject, anybody have any good ideas for piles of leftover guts and organs from cleaning say 20 or 30 chickens or one or two cows? I don't tend to eat organ meats and not all organs are really fit for consumption. |

Re: Take Out the Trash WTSHTF?
Once again WTSHTF has been a way of life in Cuba for the past 40 years and I have seen first hand what is going on...... the trash is picked once a week but the only thing is that there is nothing to pick up.
If someone has any "trash" is only a small plastic grocery bag with bones or broken glass and that's it .......... the people around my dad's house knew when I was there by the amount of trash by the curb. Three times I seen the skin of cats, with the head still attached to it, sitting by the curve. |

Bear baiting. But then I really have never had good bear meat. Shot one once it was so bad tried everything even had it smoked, no good the dog wouldn't even eat it. Compost ? |

Re: Take Out the Trash WTSHTF?
I'm with Andy on this.
Trash is a sign of abundance. When TSHTF the days of abundance will be over. Third World folks have very little trash. |
Re: Take Out the Trash WTSHTF?
Well, not all is created equal but from that statement I would presume either you've never been to the third world or else we consider trash to be different things. I will agree that most modern luxuries come with an abundance of packaging but you may be suprised how much "stuff" turns into garbage pretty quick. Most things most people own break, stop working, become unrepairable or unservicable and devalue to near zero worth over a period of years. Think about things like old computers, tv's, dvd players, tires... Then there's the issue of human waste, food waste, animal waste, etc.

Re: Take Out the Trash WTSHTF?
I've lived in the Third World.
That's what I'm talking about. When the avalanche of Walmart products stops and people start growing their own food again there'll be very little trash. Even feces are collected and used as fertilizer. |
